The next government of the United Kingdom will inherit a set of unprecedented economic challenges. But how far do the politicians of an incoming government - and the voters - understand those challenges? What will it take to create an economy fit for the future?
In this special event in partnership with The Political Quarterly, our expert panel - including Professor Michael Jacobs (University of Sheffield) and Stephanie Flanders (Bloomberg) - will face up to the unpleasant facts, and ask: what can the next government do about the economy?
Michael Jacobs is Professor of Political Economy at the University of Sheffield. He was formerly a member of the Council of Economic Advisers at the Treasury, a special adviser to Gordon Brown in the No 10 Policy Unit, and Director of the IPPR Commission on Economic Justice.
Stephanie Flanders is Head of Economics and Government at Bloomberg. She was Chief Market Strategist for Europe at J P Morgan Asset Management in London (2013-17) and BBC Economics Editor (2008-13). She has also been Senior Advisor to US Treasury Secretary Lawrence H. Summers (1997-2001), editorial-writer for the Financial Times and an economist at the Institute for Fiscal Studies and London Business School.
Gavin Kelly is Chair of the Resolution Foundation and Chief Executive of the Resolution Trust. Previously he was Chief Executive of Resolution Foundation and before this worked in No 10 Downing Street as Deputy Chief of Staff and at HMT as a member of the Council of Economic Advisors. Gavin is also Chair of the Living Wage Commission and board member of the Orwell Foundation and Political Quarterly.
